What is Yoga Therapy?
According to the International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT), Yoga Therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and wellbeing through the application and the teachings and practices of yoga.
Yoga Therapy is a whole person approach, is a person centred instead of condition centred and is health oriented instead of condition oriented.
Yoga Therapy is a lifestyle medicine. It is a mind and body approach, a holistic, complementary and mostly integrative approach addressing each individual’s needs, covering the need for self-management and evidence informed practice, applying the biopsychosocial model.
No previous experience of yoga is necessary

Where it helps?
Personal Yoga Therapy Sessions
Individual sessions allow for a therapeutic relationship to develop between practitioners and the yoga therapist, where current life situation is fully considered in the formulation of a short and easy to do personalized yoga practice with some changes in daily routine that may also be very useful.
The practice uses the entire spectrum of yoga tools that include yoga postures, breathing techniques, guided relaxation or meditation and occasionally positive affirmations and it is aimed towards supporting the individual to better cope/manage specific challenges.
Integrating ayurvedic and yogic principles, the most updated knowledge in psychology, neuroscience and physiotherapy, with compassion and sensitivity, and with a deep understanding of the influential role of the mind, a short, personalized yoga therapy program is developed for you at the first session. This is based on the Confidential Health Information Form (download here),completed by you and sent by email to evddim@gmail.com, at least 24 hours prior to your appointment
(If you do not want to put your whole name, you can put just your initials in the health form).
The first Yoga Therapy Session lasts 90 minutes.
In the first session expect to discuss your health, lifestyle, your needs and your expectations. Besides the motivational and compassionate interview, we will see the way you breath, stand, and move since they may be related with your needs. Then we develop together a short and easy to do yoga practice that makes a big difference to you and your particular needs of this period. You take this practice as daily self-care home practice of 15-20 minutes, that makes you feel much better.
The following sessions may last 60 or 90 minutes.
The next session usually takes place soon after the first consultation in order to see whether the practice needs any modification or empowerment. This pattern of checking and refining continues, with the intervals between sessions usually becoming gradually longer. Most of the people come for about 4 sessions in 8 weeks, the minimum time for any practice to show its full effectiveness, as research trials keep showing. Others prefer to continue to come back or continue at intervals of, perhaps, 4, 6 or 8 weeks. And some are happy to do their initial practice forever. This is not prescriptive and changes as each one of us are unique and have our own needs and requirements.
Any ongoing treatment can continue uninterrupted and unhampered by this complementary and integrative health and wellbeing mind and body transformative tool.
For those that practice yoga already, they find out which the most appropriate yoga practice for them based on their body, mind and special chronic or temporary needs.

Yoga Therapy for us in Yoga Therapy Greece is given in a way that our graduates can offer an integrative mind and body approach for health and wellbeing and work independently or in collaboration with health professionals.
Yoga Therapy is integrating a personal way to be physically active, the best way to breath, ways to manage stress and to be motivated to become the change you want. It enhances self-awareness, self-acceptance and self-compassion, interception & proprioception, balances the nervous system and can ultimately be a spirituality.
Yoga Therapy makes yoga non-exclusive, personal and universal. It respects the uniqueness of everyone, it reduces risks of injury, it can truly help with most chronic illnesses, it increases overall the wellbeing, it often works when more conventional approaches cannot and complements other health care systems.
Yoga Therapy focuses on stress management and building resilience, musculoskeletal conditions, fatigue and burn out, trauma and mental health conditions, respiratory and non-communicable diseases, wellbeing and quality of life, job satisfaction, empowerment, behavioural change.
Yoga Therapy is a part of yoga. Yoga classes are generally one size fits all, since the same practices are given to everybody, while the yoga teacher is unaware of the student’s relevant health information or does not know how to personalize/modify/adapt the yoga practice.
Yoga Therapy asks for an extensive knowledge in physiology, anatomy, psychology, medical conditions, relaxation techniques, interview and ability to connect and co-design personal yoga practices based on people needs.
Yoga Therapy in a 1-2-1 setting consists of an intake discussion, breathing assessment, posture and movement assessment and then a co-design of a personal practice with modified yoga tools.
Yoga Therapy tools can be movements or postures (asanas), breathing practices (pranayama), relaxation techniques and meditation practices, repetition of positive affirmations (mantras).
At least 4 yoga therapy sessions are necessary for the development and learning of the most appropriate personal practice unless there is need for mental health support or a behavioural change.
As a client you should expect a short interview about the reasons you came for and your main goals. A breathing assessment showing the breathing pattern and the condition of the nervous system, a postural and movement assessment which will show the structural tendencies and the ways to attend them. After these 4 steps, the yoga therapist with you will co-design a safe, easy to do, effective and often short practice for you to do that will make you feel much better from the very first session.
Yoga Therapy is given to groups in the corporate environment, to students and teachers in the education system, to health professionals and to group of people with common conditions or symptoms such as breast cancer patients, people suffering from insomnia, depression, anxiety, fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, hypertension etc.
